Bogra

Bogra:is a town, and one of the oldest towns in northern Bangladesh. It is a centre of commerce and trade within the Bogra District and located under the Rajshahi Division. Bogra is sometimes described as the nerve centre of Northern Bangladesh. Amongst many notable activities, it has been hosting cricket test matches in Shaheed Chandu Stadium. Bogra is also the battle honour of 5/11 Gorkha Rifles of Indian Army which fought a fierce battle with Pakistani army here during the Liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 along with Muktibahni.
Bogra town also has an importance in terms of transport in northern Bangladesh, as it's situated at the centre. Very close to the town there is a place called Mahasthangarh which was the earliest capital city of Bangladesh, formerly known as Pundravardhana. This place is considered to be sacred by Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus alike and is visited by tourists from all over Bangladesh throughout the year.

The history says it was the oldest city of Bengal in the Great Emperor Ashoka's India. He conquered the Bengal (Bongo) and founded this old city called Pundra Bardhan. It was famously written in famous ancient travellers of that time[citation needed].

This is also famous for Prafulla Chaki birth place.

Recent development

In the recent years there has been a significant development in town infrastructure. with new advanced urban planning. The town roads have been restructured and widened and telecommunications have greatly improved within the city. Gas connection through buried pipes has been set up. In recent years, red chili production in Bogra has taken a large shape, for which many companies like Square, Acme, BD Food are collecting chili from as many as 12 centers of Bogra. The business turnover has crossed 100 crore.[2] Hotel Naz Garden' http://www.hotelnazgarden.com/, is the most recent development in the area of tourism. It is luxurious 4-star hotel with International Standards and approved by the ICC. Banking in Bogra has significantly expanded with the branch expansion of private and specialized banks such as Standard Chartered Bank, Dutch Bangla Bank, BRAC Bank and so on.[3] Furthermore, online banking, ATM and modern banking facilities have been introduced.[3] Bogra is undergoing industrialization and urbanization. There are many IT and software, technology and computer services companies in Bogra and more companies are launching business here.[4] Grameen Group and Groupe Danone, a French company, entered into a joint venture named Grameen Danone and set up a nutritious yogurt project in Bogra in 2008.[5] The project aims to produce 500,000 pots of yogurt by the end of 2009.[6] Bogra is home to country's largest foundry industry. Irrigation pump, tube-well and other metal castings produced in Bogra are exported to West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Bhutan and the amount of export is increasing.[7] Most of the city's workforce is involved in agriculture (29.95%), agricultural (12.53%), commerce (18.11%), service (15.62%), transport (6.66%), wage laborer (2.2%) and others (14.93%).[

Education

There are numerous educational institutes. Bogra Zilla School is the most famous among them. Bogra Zilla School is situated at the centrer of the Bogra town (Saathmathha). It was established back in 1853. The Government girls' high school is popularly known as Victoria Memorial(VM) girls high school. It has the biggest college in the north Bengle region named Govt. Azizul Haque College which is under the National University. A large medical college & hospital named Shaheed Ziaur Rahman medical college and Hospital, equipped with adnavced facilities has been started recently. For technical hands, nevertheless, there is a famous polytechnic institute. Bogra Cantt. Public School & College MIDSENCE is also a high ranked institution. SOS Hermann Gmeiner College and the A.P.Bn Public School & College is another notable institution. The most famous English Version educational institution (under NCTB) in North Bengal region named "Millenium Scholastic School & College (MSSC) is situated in Bogra. Its former name was Blooming Bud. The institution is situated beside Jahangirabad Cantonment and was established in 1998. Also Bogra Polytechnic institute and Institute of Information Technology Bogra(IITB) on the Site of Police Line in Latifpur are noteworthy.

Bogra has stronger cultural tradition than most other districts of northern Bangladesh. It has its own own cultural identity along with dialect. The district has many tourist attractions. As a consequence, many hotels have been established in this area. Among them Akboria Grand Hotel[10] is the most famous. Akboria offers quality service with minimum cost and maximum comfort- overall, a perfect stop for tourists from different countries. Currently Akboria has 17 departments; besides lodging it has several branches as Akboria Plus, Akboria Auto-Biscuit factory, Akboria Misty Mela Chinese restaurant, Akboria Admin Cafe, Akboria Heartland Cafe, Akboria Hospital Cafeteria and many others. Hotels like Hotel Naz Garden http://www.hotelnazgarden.com/, Hotel Royal Palace, Hotel Sunview, Hotel Safeway, Hotel Siesta are also worth mentioning. Major tourist attractions include Mahasthangarh, landmarks in Bogra include the Bogra Nawab Bari Museum and amusement park and the Akboria restaurant. This city has a number of special dishes such as doi (sweet yoghurt), kotkotee (sweet pretzel), etc. It also famous for red chilies and potatoes. Programs are arranged in special occasions in due manner and festivity.[11] Bogra has a strong cultural affinity to Baul, Marfati, Lalon and Sufi music.[12] There are a number of local newspapers and journals in Bogra. The Daily Korotoa and Daily Aaj O Agamikal are two main local newspapers.[13]

Tourism

Mahasthangarh, the earliest urban archaeological site so far discovered in Bangladesh is located in Bogra. The village Mahasthan in Shibganj thana of Bogra District contains the remains of an ancient city which was called Pundranagara or Paundravardhanapura in the territory of Pundravardhana.[14][15][16] This place is considered to be sacred by Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus alike. Another tourist attraction is the Goku Medh. Gokul Medh an excavated mound in the village of Gokul under Bogra Sadar Upazila, about two km southwest of mahasthan citadel.[17] Excavations in 1934-36 by NG Majumdar revealed a gigantic shrine or sputa plinth built in the terraced cellular style of construction. "Behular Bashor Ghar" which very near to Mahasthangar is a popular place for the tourists. Tourists from all over Bangladesh visit this place throughout the year. Nawab Palace (used as Neelkuthi during the British period) and Jaina Temple are two eminent archaeological sights located in Bogra. The only 4 star hotel in Rajshahi division, Hotel Naz Garden is situated at the heart of Bogra city.[18][19]

Historical events The ancient name of Kasba was Kailapar. During the Muslim rule in India it was named Kasba. Once Kasba was the temporary capital of Tripura State. It is believed that the king of Tripura established capital at Kasba after his defeat by the king of Kachhara. There are many archaeological relics of the time of the kings of Tripura. Dharma Saagar and Kalyan Saagar were excavated during the reigns of King Dharma Manikya and King Kalyan Manikya respectively. During the War of Liberation the biggest battle-field of Sector 2 was at Kasba. In a battle between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at Kellapathar near Saldandir of Kasba 49 freedom fighters were killed.

Ashuganj

Ashuganj: is a town in the Brahmanbaria District of Chittagong Division of Bangladesh in the Meghna River delta. Its altitude is 10 meters (36 feet).

The city is known for its power plant which generates much of the electricity for the country especially for the capital city. Zia Fertilizer Ltd is on the other side of Ashuganj. It produces chemical fertilizer for the country.

The area has experienced severe power shortages but a revamped project is being planned and implemented under Japanese Debt Relief Grant Aid.[1]

Barnmanbaria: is a district in east-central Bangladesh. It is a part of the Chittagong Division. It was part of greater Comilla District until 1984. Before 1830 the Sarail Pargana was a part of Mymensingh district. The district has 4 municipalities, 39 wards, 97 mahallas, 8 upazilas, 98 union parishads, 1052 mouzas and 1329 villages.[1]
Geography:Brahmanbaria district is located at the east-central region of Bangladesh. It has a total area of 1927.11 km². Brahmanbaria is bounded by Kishoreganj District and Habiganj District on the north, Comilla District on the south, Habiganj District and Tripura State, India on the east and Meghna River, Kishoreganj District, Narsingdi District and Narayanganj District on the west.

The geography of the district is characterized by low-lying land with small hills and hillocks of red soil. Annual highest average temperature is 34.3 °C and lowest 12.7 °C. Total annual rainfall is 2551 mm. The main rivers of the district are the Meghna River, the Titas River,Buri and Haora.[1]

Culture:Brahmanbaria has a rich tradition of nurturing art, education and culture. It is often figuratively called the cultural capital of Bangladesh. To the field of literature the contributions of Adyta Mallavarman, Jotirindra Nandi, Abdul Kadir, Fazal Shahabuddin are remarkable. The town also represents a rich tradition of musical endeavor. Ustad Allauddin Khan, the great musical talent of the sub continent and the father of 'Maihar Gharana' of Classical Indian music, was born in this district in 1862.[4]

Others who contributed to the arena of music from Brahmanbaria significantly are: Ustad Fakir (Tapas) Aftab Uddin Khan, Ustad Ayet Ali Khan, Ustad Ali Akbor Khan, Ustad Bahadur Hussain Khan, Ustad Abed Hussain Khan, Ustad Khadem Hussain Khan, Ustad Raja Hussain Khan, Amar Paul, Ustad Khurshid Khan, Subal Das, Syed Abdul Hadi and Ustad Afjalur Rahman. Ustad Ayet Ali Khan established the Alauddin Music College in Brahmanbaria in 1957 and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin established the Alauddin Sangitayan in 1975. Mohorshee Monomohan Dutta is also a remarkable name for his "Molaya" music. Sachin Dev Burman (better known as SD Burman), the renowned musician of the sub-continent, spent some time in Brahmanbaria. Mr. Umesh Chandra Roy was one of the greatest musicians of Alauddin Music institute.

Al Mahmud, one of the leading poets of modern Bengali, was born in Brahmanbaria in 1936.[5][6]
History:Brahmanbaria was a part of Samatata Janapada of the ancient Bengal. The first and temporary capital of Isa Khan was at Sarail, located at 10 km north of Brahmanbaria Town. During the Mughal era, Brahmanbaria was famous for producing quality cloth Muslin.

Brahmanbaria was made one of the 3 Sub-divisions of Comilla District by the British rulers in 1860.[1] Brahmanbaria Municipality was established in 1868. It became part of East Pakistan in 1947 which eventually became independent Bangladesh in 1971.

During the 19th century, Brahmanbaria produced great nationalist leaders like Nawab Syed Shamsul Huda, who became president of All India Muslim League in 1921, and Barrister Abdur Rasul a front ranking leader of Indian National Congress. When the swadeshi movement began in the wake of the partition of Bengal (1905), Brahmanbaria born revolutionary Ullaskar Datta (Aviram) was convicted for throwing bomb and was deported to the Andamans. On 14 December 1931 Suniti Chowdhury, Shanti Ghosh and Gopal Deb killed the then District magistrate CCB Stevens at his residence by gunshot. During the peasant movement in 1930, Congress leader Abdul Hakim asked the peasants to stop payment of taxes. During the no-rent movement, four civilians were killed when the British soldiers indiscriminately fired on civilians.

Upon encouragement of Oli Ahad, a pioneer Language Movement leader who hailed from Brahmanbaria, the movement obtained momentum in this district in 1952.[7]

Bir Sreshtho Mostafa Kamal obtained martyrdom in an encounter at Daruin of Akhaura during the War of Independence in 1971.[8] The graveyard of this hero is situated at Mogra. Intellectual, freedom fighter, general secretary- east Pakistan labor federation , sheed (late) abm abdur rahim born here on 1st January, 1935 Mullah Bari, village Ghatiara, union Bashudeb, police station & district Brahmmanbaria. Pakistan army arrest abm abdur rahim , his work palace ujalla match factory, postogola Dhaka 5th may 1971, when he addressing secret meeting his work place with his stuff, worker & local leader about participate liberation war as a freedom fighter for independent Bangladesh. Pakistan army convicted him as a state-enemy. They start a Police case as state-enemy against abm rahim at tejgon police station same day. He couldn’t come bake from Pakistani army’s custody. After liberation Bangabandhu shekh mojibar rahman wrote a later Rahims family with sorrow & he gives money his wife. Economy:Main occupations: Agriculture 44.79%, agricultural labourer 15.82%, wage labourer 3.13%, commerce 12.26%, service 6.8%, fishing 2.02% and transport 1.85%, weaving 2.39% and others 10.94%.
Land Use: Total cultivable land 1,522.80 km²; fallow land 7 km²; single crop 28.38%, double crop 53.95% and triple crop land 17.67%; land under irrigation 55.31%.
Land Control: Among the peasants 11% are landless, 61% small, 24% intermediate and 4% rich; cultivable land 700 m² per head.
Main crops: Rice, jute, wheat, mustard seed, potato, onion, garlic, chili, pulses, brinjal and Kakrol.
Main Fruits: Mango, jackfruit, blackberry, papaya, coconut, guava, lemon and banana.
Manufacturing plants: Fertiliser factory, flour mills, rice mills, ice factory, oil mill, saw mill, welding, etc. Zia Fertilizer, the biggest fertilizer factory of Bangladesh is located by the bank of Meghna at Ashuganj, which is a major trade centre of rice in the eastern part of Bangladesh.
Electric Power: Ashuganj Tap Bidyut Kendra(Power centre)located in the bank of Meghna,is the major power generation centre for capital Dhaka.Main raw material for this plant is Titas gas.
Minerals: Titas Gasfield is located at the outskirts of Brahmanbaria town. This field was discovered in 1962. As per latest official re-estimation, total recoverable gas reserve of Titas gas field is 4,740 billion cubic feet (134 km3). Commercial gas production from this field was commenced in 1968 and till August 31, 2006 total 2,581.162 billion cubic feet (7.30904×1010 m3) gas has been produced. The wells are spread (surface location) at 6 (six) different locations stretched over about 8 km distance. At present maximum 475 million cubic feet (13,500,000 m3) of gas is produced daily and supplied to the transmission pipelines of Titas Gas Transmission & Distribution Co. Ltd. (TGTDCL) and Gas Transmission Company Ltd. (GTCL). Condensate produced (540 bbl (86 m3) per day on an average) with gas as by-product is fractionated into MS (Petrol) and HSD(Diesel) through two fractionation plants and the products are being supplied to Padma Oil Company Ltd. Saldanodi Gas field is another gas field sitiuated in Kasba.It also plays an important contribution in national economy.This is launched by BAPEX.Meghna Gas Field is another Gas field of Brahmanbaria.
Cottage Industries: The district is famous for the production of cotton fabrics. In the nineteenth century, Tanjeb, a fine quality muslin, used to be produced in Sarail. Hats, made of cane, are being produced at Radhika from the British period. Since Brahmanbaria has a rich tradition of boat race, boats are being made at Champaknagar.

Brahmanbaria Station,renovated in 2004, is one of the busiest Railway Stations in the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet line. Akhaura Junction is the biggest railway junction in the eastern part of Bangladesh.

Wazirpur Upazila: is an Upazila of Barisal District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh.
Geography:Wazirpur is located at 22.8111°N 90.2444°E . It has 44480 households and a total area of 248.35 km².
DemographicsAs of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Wazirpur has a population of 227115. Males constitute are 50.8% of the population, and females 49.2%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 114254. Wazirpur has an average literacy rate of 47.7% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]
